What is a Company UTR?

A company UTR is a 10-digit reference HMRC issues for Corporation Tax. You use it to file company tax returns (CT600), to register for Corporation Tax online and to make and trace tax payments.

Important

The UTR is different from your Companies House company number. Don't confuse the two when filing or making payments. The UTR is specifically for HMRC tax matters.

Where to Look First — 7 Places to Find Your Company UTR

Below are the most common places your company UTR will appear. Try them in order — most people find it quickly on documents they already have.

1

Any Letter from HMRC About Corporation Tax

The UTR is printed on HMRC letters such as notices to file, statements of account and payment reminders. If your company receives mail from HMRC, check those envelopes and PDFs first.

2

Previous Company Tax Return (CT600)

Your CT600 form, Company Tax calculation or online submission confirmation from HMRC will show the company UTR. If someone in your team filed the CT600, ask them to open the file.

3

Corporation Tax Payment References

If you have made corporation tax payments, the payment reference or payment confirmation often includes the UTR or the reference you used for payment — check bank records and payment receipts.

4

Your Accountant or Payroll Provider

If you use an accountant or agent they will have the UTR on file and can confirm it quickly. This is the fastest route if you do not hold the paperwork yourself.

Company Formation Documents

The incorporation pack or welcome letter you received when the company was formed often records the UTR (HMRC normally issues the UTR after Companies House notifies them of the new company).

7

Company Records and Filing Software

If you use cloud accounting or company filing software, the UTR is often stored in the company profile or in past CT600/filing records. Search the admin or settings area of the software.

If You Still Cannot Find the UTR — How to Get HMRC to Reissue It

If you have checked the places above and still cannot find the UTR you can ask HMRC to post the number to your company address.

Security Note

HMRC will not normally give the full UTR over the phone for security reasons, but will send it by post after confirming identity and company details.

Allow up to 10–15 working days for the reissue; times may vary in busy periods.

Request UTR Reissue from HMRC

You can start the reissue process via GOV.UK guidance on finding a lost UTR. If you cannot find it anywhere, follow the link below to ask HMRC to send it again by post.

How the UTR is Used (Quick Notes)

Filing CT600

You need the UTR to file the CT600 (company tax return) and to register for Corporation Tax online.

Contacting HMRC

You supply the UTR when contacting HMRC about company tax or when tracing payments.

Security and Practical Tips

Keep it secure: Keep the UTR in a secure place (digital or physical). Only share it with authorised staff, your accountant or authorised agents.

Check registered address: Check the registered office address held at Companies House is correct — HMRC sends UTR letters to that address. If the address is wrong update Companies House first to ensure post is delivered correctly.

Don't confuse with company number: Note that the UTR is different from your Companies House company number. Don't confuse the two when filing or when making payments.
