Get Your Documents Together
Getting your documents ready beforehand makes the process much smoother. Grab a cup of tea and find the following:
- A mobile phone: For receiving security codes.
- An email address you can access easily.
- Your National Insurance (NI) Number, date of birth, and address.
- A recent payslip or P60, a valid UK Driving Licence, and UK Passport.

Go to the Official GOV.UK Website
Follow the link below and head to the official Government website and click the green button to ‘Start now’.

Scroll Down and Click "Start now"

Under the New Users of Government Gateway, click "Create sign in details"

Enter and Verify Your Email Address
You’ll first be prompted to enter your email address. You’ll then receive a verification code. Once you’ve entered that code and it has been accepted, click ‘Continue’.

Enter Your Name
You’ll then be asked your full name and be prompted to set a strong password (10 characters or more).

You’ve Got Your Government Gateway ID
Your HMRC Government Gateway user ID will be shown on the screen and an email will be sent. Please keep a copy of this ID and remember the password you have used.

Choose the Type of Account You Need
You’ll now be asked to choose which type of personal tax account you’d like to create as you are creating your personal tax account so select the first option.
